What really went wrong in Courteney and David's marriage?

Courteney Cox and David Arquette's separation doesn't exactly come as a surprise—especially since they were so open about their marital problems—but now everyone wants to play the blame game.

Any guesses as to who it's falling on according to pals?

Tabloids are quick to jump on David's partying ways as a big reason for the breakup, and friends aren't doing much to dispute that easy explanation.

Arquette has been spending "a lot" of his free time with friend and business partner Jeff Beacher. Jeff and David have been working on a theater project for the Roosevelt Hotel together. Guess we'll assume David hitting the Hollywood scene solo recently is just research?

The two hit a private bash Saturday night in Beverly Hills, and for a guy who is on a trial separation from his wife, he looked "super cheerful." Super.

"David looked like he was having an amazing time hanging out with Jeff and Seth [MacFarlane] laughing, drinking and smoking some cigars," says a source who was witness to Arquette's "carefree" attitude. "Everyone was wondering where Courteney was, so guess it makes sense now."

Still, our spy insists a ringless David wasn't creeping on girls:

"No flirting or ladies. Only thing I saw was him laughing and snapping pics with Cirque du Soleil performers for a while. He and Jeff were just inseparable all night, talking business."

Unfortunately, thanks to David's TMI on Howard Stern Tuesday morning, we know that he's had sex "once or twice" since the separation, presumably with Jasmine Waltz, a cocktail waitress in Hollywood.

As for whether a reconciliation might happen? "It's doubtful," laments a close friend to the talented couple, who've been admirably frank about their counseling sessions.

But let's remember, David, a super nice, easy-going dude had a bit of a rocky romance with the more high-energy, ambitious Courteney, to begin with. Remember, they were friends and colleagues first (from the Scream franchise), and then the odd couple became something more.

An impressive 11-year marriage and a beautiful child resulted.
