2015 was a tough year for love.

Sure, there were a few hot Hollywood hookups that took place, but by and large, 2015 was filled with longtime celebrity couples shockingly splitting up. These were big breakups, too—we're talking Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale and even Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog.

Divorce is devastating, but it's less painful when both parties involved are amicable. Fortunately, this seems to be the case with most of these former couples. Still, though, that small silver lining isn't doing much to get us over those breakup blues. Le sigh.

Without further ado, let's take a look back at the most shocking celebrity splits of 2015.

Patrick Dempsey and Jillian Fink: In mid-January, E! News confirmed that the former Grey's Anatomy star's wife of 15 years had filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. The exes asked for privacy for their three children—Tallulah, Darby and Sullivan.

There might be hope for reconciliation here, though. In November, the exes were spotted holding hands in Paris. Furthermore, a source told People magazine Patrick and Jillian were "working on their relationship" nearly 11 months after filing for divorce.

Mandy Moore and Ryan Adams: We didn't see this one coming! In mid-January, reps for the Mandy and Ryan  released a joint statement confirming the former pair had "mutually decided to end their marriage of almost 6 years," adding, "It is a respectful, amicable parting of ways and both Mandy and Ryan are asking for media to respect their privacy at this time."

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner:On June 30, Jen and Ben announced their plans to divorce.  "We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time," the exes added in a joint statement.

Rumors quickly surfaced that Ben's alleged infidelity (which he adamantly denied) with the kids' former nanny led to his split with Jennifer. Sources told E! News there was, indeed, "a lot of tension" between Jen and Ben for a while, "but it wasn't all about the nanny."

That said, the twosome managed to put aside their differences for the sake of daughters Violet and Seraphina and son Samuel. Sources tell E! News the exes plan to spend the holidays together with all three kids, explaining, "They are a unit...They are all about the kids and making sure they are okay. They are committed to parenting together."

Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick: The Keeping Up With the Kardashians stars broke up over the Fourth of July weekend. "Kourtney has always taken Scott back and been by his side, but now with three kids it has gotten old,"a source told E! News at the time. "Kourtney has to do what's best for the kids."

Immediately after the split, Scott entered a rehab facility in Florida, only to check himself out a few hours later. In mid-October, he checked himself back into treatment for alcohol abuse; a source told E! News the father of three is "doing really well" and is taking his recovery "really seriously this time."

Kourtney has said, however, it would take "a lot" for her to take Scott back.

Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert: In mid-July, the country stars confirmed their plans to divorce after four years of marriage. "This is not the future we envisioned and it is with heavy hearts that we move forward separately," they said in a joint statement. "We are real people, with real lives, with real families, friends and colleagues. Therefore, we kindly ask for privacy and compassion concerning this very personal matter."

The breakup was an amicable one, with both exes wishing the best for one another. Miranda is "happy" again following the split and casually "dating" again, and Blake is dating fellow The Voice coach Gwen Stefani.

Reba McEntire and Narvel Blackstock: In early August, the longtime country couple announced they were separating after 26 years of marriage. In a joint statement posted to Reba's personal website, the exes revealed they'd been separated for the "past few months." However, "despite this being the end of their marriage, they continue to support each other."

The statement concluded, "They have worked together for 35 years and will continue to do so. They have asked that you respect their privacy during this time."

Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale: After 13 years of marriage, the No Doubt rocker filed for divorce from the Bush musician. "While the two of us have come to the mutual decision that we will no longer be partners in marriage, we remain partners in parenthood and are committed to jointly raising our three sons in a happy and healthy environment," the couple said in a statement. "To that end, we respectfully request privacy from the media during this time."

Reports claimed that Gavin cheated on his then-wife with the children's former nanny (neither star's reps commented on any such reports). Gwen took comfort in a new romance with her fellow The Voice coach, Blake.

Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog: In early, August, The Muppets co-stars released a joint statement announcing their controversial decision to part ways. "After careful thought, thoughtful consideration and considerable squabbling, Kermit the Frog and moi have made the difficult decision to terminate our romantic relationship," Missy Piggy wrote in a Facebook post. "We will continue to work together on television (The Muppets/Tuesdays 8 p.m, this fall on ABC) and in all media now known or hereafter devised, in perpetuity, throughout the universe. However, our personal lives are now distinct and separate, and we will be seeing other people, pigs, frogs, et al. This is our only comment on this private matter...unless we get the right offer. Thank you for your understanding."

It didn't take Kermit long to move on--he fell for a pig named Denise from ABC's marketing department. As for Miss Piggy? She found herself in the swoon-worthy arms of Liam Hemsworth.

Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt: In early September, the longtime loves shocked the nation when they confirmed they were ending their romantic relationship after nearly two decades together. "With great sadness, we have decided to separate, after 18 years of love and shared history," the former couple said in a statement to People magazine. "We will continue to be supportive of each other in every way possible moving forward."

Here's hoping 2016 is a better year in the world of longtime celebrity loves.
