J.J. Abrams knew the latest Star Wars trailer was going to be big. But he didn't exactly predict how huge it was going to become.
Less than a week after the sneak peek of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens aired on Monday Night Football, the director chatted with E! News about all of the buzz surrounding the project.
And yes, we couldn't help but ask for answers in regards to where Luke Skywalker was in the teaser.
"It's no accident that you asked that question," Abrams told E! News at the GLSEN Respect Awards. "But I can't wait for you to find out the answer."
What Abrams can share is the simple fact that he is more than thrilled with the enthusiasm from fans.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, presales for the Disney and Lucasfilm project broke every IMAX record, generating more than $6.5 million in domestic ticket sales from moviegoers.
In fact, several sites including IMAX, Fandango and MovieTickets.com suffered outages after so many moviegoers flocked to the Internet to purchase passes.
"Our job was not to destroy Fandango," Abrams joked. "It was to try and make a movie that people would be excited about."
He added, "There was a lot of people and I could not be more grateful to anyone who checked out the trailer and I hope that they want to see the movie and I hope they like it."
Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in theatres nationwide on Dec. 18.
