SYTYCD: The Girls Are Superheroes, and Evan's In Trouble
Kelsey McNeal/Fox
Don't hate us, but after watching tonight's SYTYCD top-six performance show, we're officially gunning for one of the remaining dancers. Evan Kasprzak is adorable and charming and we truly want the best for him in life, but he's too weak a dancer to be in the final four of So You Think You Can Dance season five. If he stays and either Brandon or Ade leave instead, it will be a travesty.
Why have we come to this conclusion? And what else went down on tonight's installment of SYTYCD? Read on...
Group Dances: Adored both pieces by crazy contemporary choreographer Sonya Tayeh. Her glow-in-the-dark/harlequin/Willy Wonka work, featuring the four boys, was acrobatic and thrilling, but her superheroes dance featuring Melissa, Jeanine and Kayla was a hugely memorable highlight, one that we hope to see on tour later this year.
Pairings: OK, here's the thing with Evan. He's a good man, but he's been lagging far behind his competition for a while now. His folksy Midwestern charm is just not enough anymore! Despite Broadway being Evan's style, the Tyce Diorio-choreographed wedding dance was just dull. (And the Louis Van Amstel quickstep was just as snoozy.) Most of all, it will not be cool if Melissa goes home this Thursday because she was partnered with the weakest of the three remaining guys.
Kayla and Brandon, on the other hand, are wonderful, wonderful dancers. They're not great reality-show contestants, because their personas are just so infinitely bland, but when their long and sculpted limbs are in motion it's magical. This was especially in evidence during their performance of Stacey Tookey contemporary.
Last but not least, the personality twins, Jeanine and Ade, did themselves proud tonight. Jeanine literally shook her tailfeathers for a Van Amstel samba. Mary Murphy complained about their technique (and their samba rolls were pretty sketch) but that was a damn fun dance, so we don't care. The NappyTabs hip-hop was weird and clumsy but Jeanine and Ade should at least get points for effort.
Judges: Totally over Lil C as a judge. He blathers on forever and says nothing and the pretentious speeches aren't fun anymore. If nothing else, maybe they could bring a former contestant to judge. Fans would probably respond well to a return appearance by Benji Schwimmer, for example.
