Good thing Britney Spears didn't star in a movie last year.
The Golden Raspberry Awards showed no mercy to another troubled young star, bestowing three of its "worst" nominations Monday on Lindsay Lohan.
Eddie Murphy, one year removed from his Oscar nomination for Dreamgirls, was nominated for five unwanted Razzies—more than any other star—for his box-office hit (but critical miss) Norbit.
Lohan, whose 2007 was marred by rehab stints and arrests, as well as a string of box-office bombs, was dinged for her thriller I Know Who Killed Me, which led all films with nine nominations, a total padded by the dual-role-playing Lohan's two Worst Actress nods.
According to the Razzies, Lohan is the first actor to compete against herself for Worst Actress, something that could be viewed as an accomplishment...but probably won't be.
In any case, it could have been worse for Lohan. But fortunately, Georgia Rule, her other 2007 big-screen credit, rated zero nominations.
Proving the Razzies pick on the high and mighty, as well as the down and out, I Now You Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, Adam Sandler's latest $100 million-grossing comedy, tied with Norbit with eight nominations.
Bratz, the doll-spawned teen comedy Paula Abdul had the good fortune to be disassociated from, and Daddy Day Camp, the sequel to the Murphy hit that didn't star Murphy, were two other big targets, with five nominations each.
The two films will compete, if that's the word, with I Know Who Killed Me, I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry and Norbit for Worst Picture.
The Worst Actor category finds Murphy and Sandler squaring off against Jim Carrey, razzed for The Number 23, and two former Oscar winners, Cuba Gooding Jr., who sat in for Murphy in Daddy Day Camp and costarred opposite Murphy in Norbit, and Nicolas Cage, who found his box-office mojo in 2007 but found himself dishonored for all three of his starring roles in Ghost Rider, Next and National Treasure: Book of Secrets.
Like Cage, Jessica Alba rated a Worst Actress nod on the strength of her '07 body of work: Awake, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer and Good Luck Chuck. Her competition: Elisha Cuthbert, taking a bullet for the controversial torture flick Captivity; Because I Said So's Diane Keaton; the four young leading ladies of Bratz; Lohan; and Lohan.
The supporting categories were used to further besmirch Murphy, who was nominated as both Worst Supporting Actor and Worst Supporting Actress for two more characters he played in Norbit. Murphy also turned up again in the Worst Screen Couple category, where he was dinged for playing opposite himself—and himself. To top things off, he pulled in a Worst Screenplay nomination for helping write North by Northwest—er, sorry, Norbit.
Other nomination highlights, if that's the word:
- Nicollette Sheridan, often overlooked at the Emmys and the Golden Globes for her work in Desperate Housewives, was pounced on by Razzie voters for her supporting turn in the Cedric the Entertainment comedy Code Name: The Cleaner.
- Diving in to the show's weakness for bad puns, the Razzies retitled Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End as Pirates of the Carob-bean: At Wit's End—all in the name of a single nomination for Orlando Bloom as Worst Supporting Actor.
- Jessica Biel gave Jessica Alba a run for her Razzies, pulling in a Worst Supporting Actress nod for Chuck & Larry and Next, as well as competing against Alba for the Worst Screen Couple dishonor.
- The releases of Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, Captivity, Hannibal Rising, Hostel: Part II and I Know Who Killed Me inspired a new Razzie category: Worst Excuse for a Horror Movie.
- Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor, who penned Oscar winner Sideways, drew Razzie nods for having their names attached to Chuck & Larry.
- Former child star Fred Savage earned his first big-screen directing credit on Daddy Day Camp—and his first Razzie nod, for Worst Director.
The 28th annual Razzie Awards are to be presented, per usual, on the day before the Oscars: Feb. 23.
Writers' strike or no, actors' boycott or no, the Razzies sounded confident that the show will go on, noting in its press release that it was "the one awards show where the stars never show up" anyway.
Hollywood reasserts itself and its good-film-promoting agenda Tuesday morning, with the announcement of the nominations for the 80th annual Academy Awards.
