Beauty of an Emmy for Barker

The night was right for Bob Barker.

The 83-year-old tube icon, who officially called it a career Friday with the airing of his final Price Is Right, was a big winner Friday night at the Daytime Emmy Awards, taking home his 19th trophy for Outstanding Game Show Host and a win for Outstanding Game Show, leading CBS to a field-best 16 statuettes.

In a fitting tribute to his retirement, the Eye network offered a special prime-time repeat of his last Price, before carrying the Daytime Emmy ceremony live from Hollywood's Kodak Theater.

"Come on down!" shouted presenter Ellen DeGeneres, after announcing Barker had beaten out a field that included last year's winner, Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek, as well as Wheel of Fortune's Pat Sajak, Cash Cab's Ben Bailey and Meredith Vieira of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

Barker also earned a standing ovation for his half century in television, including 35 years at the helm of the classic game show.

"This proves that the judges had sympathy for an old man who doesn't have a job," Barker joked. "I want to thank the television viewers across the country for inviting me into their homes for 50 years."

The longtime animal-rights activist then bid goodbye with his signature sign-off: "And remember, help control the pet population. Have your pet spayed or neutered."

Earlier that evening, he presented an award with his Barker's Beauties, the models who showcase the items up for bid on The Price Is Right. Barker had collected his 18th award for Outstanding Game Show at Thursday night's Creative Arts ceremony.

The big loser of the night turned out to be ABC's ladies of The View, who, despite an adrenaline jolt from Rosie O'Donnell in her first (and last) season, remained winless in the talk-show categories. Once again, DeGeneres dominated, winning Outstanding Talk Show Host for the third consecutive year and Outstanding Talk Show for The Ellen DeGeneres Show for the fourth straight time.

"I really am shocked," DeGeneres said, noting the huge ratings generated by the View crew of O'Donnell, Barbara Walters, Joy Behar and Elisabeth Hasselbeck. "I thought Rosie brought a lot of new viewers to daytime television, and it was interesting."

DeGeneres quipped that she might try to stir up some controversy of her own, à la O'Donnell, then promptly called Bob Barker "a quitter," eliciting laughs from the man himself.

(Showing just how big O'Donnell's presence was, even though she had skipped the ceremony, Barker told reporters backstage he believed she could replace him as host of The Price Is Right.)

On the soap side, The Guiding Light, which led the pack with 17 nominations, and The Young and the Restless—both CBS shows—tied for Outstanding Drama Series.

Maura West scored Lead Actress props for her role in As the World Turns, while Young and the Restless star Christian LeBlanc was named Outstanding Lead Actor. General Hospital's Genie Francis and Rick Hearst won in the supporting categories. Outstanding ' Younger Actress in a Drama Series went to As the World's Jennifer Landon, while Young and the Restless'' Bryton McClure scored for Younger Actor.

All told, between the seven awards it scored at Thursday's Creative Arts ceremony and the nine it earned Friday, CBS reigned supreme with 16 wins, edging out PBS by one. ABC finished with nine trophies, while NBC snagged five.
