Like salt and pepper, peanut butter and jelly cucumber sandwiches and high tea, and Brad and Angelina, Prince William and Kate Middleton are something of a package deal.

So when Wills saddled up, dressed himself in his finest polo whites and took part in the Audi Polo Challenge in Chester, England, today, we (and the ever salivating fashion world) expected to see a beaming, glossy-haired and enviably dressed Kate keeping vigil on the sidelines.

But instead, William rocked up to the charity match all by his lonesome self. And while we get that he's the future heir to the throne and all, it's his better half that we find, well, better. So where was the duchess?

Well, having already caused mass fashion hysteria and crashed the website of one online retailer this past month, the royal newlywed has apparently fulfilled her quota and decided to sit this public appearance out.

Then again, if everytime you stepped outside your front door, the world's media convulsed in excitement, you'd probably become more of a homebody, too.

As for his solo foray at the polo tournament today, William competed—and won!—on behalf of the organization Skill Force. (Last month, Prince Harry made a similar outing, participating in the Audi Challenge Polo Cup, though he did have a fashionable beauty by his side: Chelsea Davy Charlize Theron.)

As it happens, the brothers will face off next Sunday in the Sentebale Polo Cup, an event for which Kate is much more likely (though alas, not guaranteed) to show up to.

But those waiting for their Kate fix won't have much longer to go—she and William will be back together in the public eye next Thursday, when they're set to attend the Absolute Return for Kids gala dinner in England. Ladies, get your credit cards ready.
