Ian Somerhalder is clearly more than just a pretty face. He's a pretty face who's trying to make the world a better place.

During an appearance on Thursday's Chelsea Lately, the Vampire Diaries star talked about how he became involved with Years of Living Dangerously, the new Showtime documentary series focusing on climate change.

"When your manager calls you and tells you James Cameron, Jerry Weintraub and Arnold Schwarzenegger are producing a show for Showtime that's Harrison Ford, Don Cheadle, Matt Damon, Lesley Stahl, Thomas Friedman, and then says you, I jumped out of my chair," the 35-year-old actor recalled.

He explained, "It's a nine-episode docu-series [that] shows the world these insane things that are happening," adding that he's "beyond grateful" the program was developed.

Of course, it's no secret that Somerhalder is passionate about environmental issues. After all, he did create a foundation that aims to "empower, educate and collaborate with people and projects to positively impact the planet and its creatures."

The organization distributes funds geared towards global conservation, green energy development and educational tools, and creates awareness about the harmful impact of global deforestation among many other things.
