So True? So False? Did Bill Clinton Really Get Asked to Compete on Dancing With the Stars?!

Would a reality show lackey really have the mirror balls to ask the former president to hit the parquet?

Mirror balls of steel.

That's what it would likely have taken for the poor Dancing With the Stars lackey who had to pluck up their courage and extend an offer to hit the parquet (with a straight face, no less) to one of the most popular and enduringly hard-working former leaders of the free world.

But that, rumor has it, is exactly what happened, when the reality hit tried to woo no less a star than Bill Clinton to its dancefloor.

But could it possibly be true? Did Dancing With the Stars really ask the former president to compete? There's no dancing around this issue. This rumor is…

So true!

But as much as we would have liked to see Clinton turn up in a one-piece sparkly number and get his disco on, it just wasn't destined to happen. But not, as one might think, because it was beneath the dignity of the former commander in chief.

To hear him tell it, it was simply a scheduling conflict.

"This is interesting, actually, they contacted me once about this," Clinton said on the Rachael Ray Show, to incredulous hoots and hollers from the crowd. "And I told them I didn't have the time to train for it…so I had to pass."

But not for lack of interest.

"I would like to master the tango, that's what I would love to do," he said. "Just last night, Hillary said to me, 'You know, when I'm not secretary of state anymore, we should take dancing lessons.' So we'll start with the tango."

Too bad. He would've campaigned for votes like nobody's business. And if anyone could've given Bristol Palin a real run for her money, it's Bill.
