They passed out the 1997 Soul Train Music Awards Friday night and--for the first time during this awards season-- a new face outshone Babyface.

Rookie recorder Maxwell captured all three awards for which he was nominated--male R&B/soul single, album and new artist. Coming off his three Grammy triumph, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds picked up the Sammy Davis Jr. Award for Entertainer of the Year. Multiple Grammy-winner and Babyface prodigy Toni Braxton picked up awards for female R&B/soul single and album.

The night's biggest award, best R&B/soul or rap album was posthumously awarded to Tupac Shakur for his multi-platinum double-disc All Eyez on Me.

Legendary producer-performer Curtis Mayfield collected the Quincy Jones Outstanding Career Achievements from Jones himself.

Awards were presented Friday during a live, two-hour telecast from Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium. The ceremony was co-hosted by Gladys Knight, LL Cool J, and Brandy. Presenters included Snoop Doggy Dogg, Aaliyah, Immature, Tisha Campbell and Heavy D, and Keith Sweat, En Vogue, Fugees and Mary J. Blige performed.
