EVGA/AKM-GSIReports began circulating this week that Justin Theroux—a New York resident for nearly 20 years—made an offensive joke about 9/11 while on set for The Leftovers.
An extra for the show told PageSix Jennifer Aniston's hubby was overheard saying, "9/11 was the best thing that happened to New Yorkers," which he reportedly followed with a story about how he struck a deal on rent due to the tragic events.
The insider noted, "He said at the end of the process, the landlord was so mad, they threw the keys at him."
However, a rep for Theroux promises the devout citizen of NYC would never make such a statement. "As a New Yorker and someone who has lived downtown for over 20 years, Justin would not make jest of 9/11," the rep told PageSix.
Meanwhile, several celebrities have come under fire this year for their poor choices regarding the Sept. 11 attacks.
The League actor, Steve Rannazzisi, was scrutinized after he came clean about a fake 9/11 escape story he's been telling for over 10 years, admitting that an apology will never be enough for his actions.
"I am truly, truly sorry," he said in a statement in September. "For many years, more than anything, I have wished that, with silence, I could somehow erase a story told by an immature young man. It only made me more ashamed."
In more shocking news, Devo singer, Jerry Casale, was given a 9/11-themed wedding when he married his wife on the 14th anniversary of the tragic events this year. The party favors included box cutters and the cake was created out of the Twin Towers with the couple's faces printed on them.
Casale took to Twitter shortly after the photos surfaced from the reception, writing, "Deep apologies for all offended. There is a real explanation and its not what you think. Surprise cake and pix to TMZ was a set up."
