Deeks is in trouble—pretty big trouble. The LAPD detective was arrested at the end of this week's episode of NCIS: Los Angeles, and he might have had more to do with the crime he's accused of than anyone wants to believe.

"There's obviously things that you share with the people that you love, and then there are things that are so dark and so deep that you can't even share them with yourself," Eric Christian Olsen explains to E! News. "I think that's what Deeks is dealing with right now."

This revelation will have repercussions both professionally and personally—naturally, considering he's in jail and the NCIS: LA team will have to prove his innocence—but it'll seriously test his relationship with Kensi (Daniela Ruah).

"Kensi is the person he has the best and most successful relationship he's ever had in his life, but yet there's something in his past that is so bad that he's afraid to admit it to her and I think also to himself," Olsen says. "He just hoped it would go away and obviously this is the resurrection of this darkness."

Right now, Kensi is simply shocked at the unexpected turn of events.

"I don't think Kensi would think Deeks had done anything that warranted him being arrested. But then why is he being arrested? A lot of times emotions get in the way of your logic and I think that might be what happens here," Ruah says. "She's just in shock and she doesn't understand why this is happening. In her mind, the big thing is, 'I don't care what happened here, I am by his side no matter what.' They're not only lovers and best friends, but they're partners and teammates. Teammates stick by your side before they make any decisions."

We'll learn what Deeks is accused of on Dec. 7 after a short Thanksgiving hiatus, but know it's bad—really bad. And Olsen isn't sure whether his character is completely innocent.

E! News spoke to Olsen and Ruah exclusively about the huge test to their characters' relationship, and how Deeks will find his way out of jail.

Did Deeks actually do it?

Olsen: You know what it is? You know the cultural sensation of Serial, the podcast? Deeks is Adnan. That's exactly what this episode is, except you are completely and totally emotionally invested. We met Adnan after he was arrested. We became obsessed with that story after the fact. This is the origin story of Adnan, and we don't know whether or not he is guilty or not of the crime that he has been arrested for.

CBS

So, do you think Adnan was guilty?

Olsen: I thought he was a sociopath and that he obviously killed her.

Ruah: I obsessively listened to it and I don't know what to think. I just read recently in the news that his case is being reopened and they are going to listen to his appeal, so I am really curious to know. I thought that maybe he is guilty but that the case presented didn't necessarily give enough proof to justify his arrest. It's weird. I think he did it but I don't think he should have been convicted based on the evidence they had.

Olsen: 100 percent. He should have been let off.

How will this obstacle affect Deeks and Kensi's romantic relationship?

Ruah: She wants him to talk to her and I don't think she ever feels like he's giving her a clear answer, which is really, really frustrating. It's definitely really tough for her to deal with. I think she knows there's more to the story than what he's saying, and he's not opening up to her. That's hurtful not only on a partner level but also on a relationship level. We're supposed to be able to confide anything in each other without fear of judgment.

Should we worry for them?

Ruah: I think you can have faith that they're going to try as hard as they can to be together.

Olsen: I don't know if I agree with that. I just think that the most interesting and compelling relationships are those with the largest obstacles to overcome. I think this is a really big one and I don't know where they'll land.

Ruah: But that doesn't mean that they're not going to fight to fix it! You can't say that Kensi's not trying her best to figure this out and to handle it and to fix it.

Olsen: Yes, 100 percent.

Ruah: Don't tell me I'm not committed!

NCIS: LA airs Monday nights at 10 p.m. on CBS.
