A.M.P.A.S./Michael YadaUPDATE: U2 has canceled two concerts in Paris following shootings and explosions throughout the French capital that have left at least 129 dead.
The band wrote the following statement on its website:
"As a result of the ongoing state of emergency across France, the U2 Paris concerts scheduled for the 14th and 15th November will not be going ahead as planned. U2 and Live Nation, along with HBO who were due to live broadcast the Saturday concert, are fully resolved to go ahead with this show at an appropriate time."
"We watched in disbelief and shock at the unfolding events in Paris and our hearts go out to all the victims and their families across the city tonight," the statement said. "We are devastated at the loss of life at the Eagles of Death Metal concert and our thoughts and prayers are with the band and their fans. And we hope and pray that all of our fans in Paris are safe."
U2: iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Live in Paris was set to premiere at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on Saturday, and would have broadcast a show from the Paris stop on the band's most recent world tour. The i+e tour setlists have spanned U2's entire career, from debut album Boy to most recent release Songs of Innocence.
The band and HBO announced their collaboration in July, revealing that the band would work with director Hamish Hamilton to bring the AccorHotels Arena show and an accompanying behind-the-scenes documentary to TVs all around the world.
"U2 continues to take risks, which has made them one of the most consistently exciting forces in rock ‘n' roll," HBO programming president Michael Lombardo said at the time the special was announced. "The one-two combination of this documentary special, followed by the concert, will provide viewers with the ultimate look at this remarkable band behind the scenes and on the stage."
U2 had been posting photos from Paris all week in preparation for the show, the most recent update coming just hours before the attacks. The band had played concerts at the same venue, the AccorHotels Arena, on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.
