Never change, Joss Whedon

The Comic-Con and pop culture staple appeared as a surprise at this year's SDCC, but not as a panelist. Instead, he took to the stage to moderate the panel for Comedy Central's hilarious Downton Abbey/reality TV satire Another Period.

"Everything I have seen about this show is my favorite thing," Whedon said as he introduced the panel. "It makes us laugh but it makes us think and it reminds us of the universal truth: that rich white people are f—ing insane. It's obviously a fantasy and something we can all laugh at, because those days are all over—and then Donald Trump says something. suspect he may be a Bellacourt."

Whedon was, of course, referring to the lavishly self-centered Bellacourt family at the center of Another Period, consisting of sisters Lillian (Natasha Leggero) and Beatrice (Riki Lindhome), their brother Frederick (Jason Ritter), their other, weirder sister Hortense (Lauren Ash), and their parents, played by Paget Brewster and David Koechner, all of whom live surrounded by the greatest luxuries the early 1900s can buy them.

Mad Men's Christina Hendricks even appears as a servant named Chair, and if that doesn't encourage you to watch the show, we don't know what will.

Paula Deen was also not safe from the quick wit of Whedon, though he wasn't the one who brought her up in the first place.

During the fan q&a portion of the panel, a fan asked if some of the show's black face jokes (Whedon did refer to the show as "abominably offensive") were in reference to Paula Deen's recent Twitter controversy.

"She does act like it's last century, much in the matter of the Trump," Whedon said, bringing everything full circle as only he could.

Since he's not tied up with any Marvel panels this year, perhaps we can expect a few more surprise appearances from Whedon as SDCC continues!
