Larry Busacca/Getty ImagesAfter Michael Douglas suggested that his throat cancer could have been caused by oral sex, the actor quickly made front-page headlines.
And while many professionals including Dr. Drew Pinsky praised the star for his honest confession, Douglas admits that it may not have been the best move for Catherine Zeta-Jones.
"It was one of those things…and I so regretted any embarrassment that it caused Catherine," he shared with Event Magazine. "And her family."
He continued, "We had a little bump in the road. The problem in this business is that everything is so public."
In fact, the couple ultimately split in August 2013 but not before reconciling and getting back together months later.
"I love Catherine as much, more than I ever have," he shared with the publication. "And hopefully the feeling's mutual."
He added, "We worked things out—if both people want to work something out and make it better, you can do it. You can't do it if it's just one person."
Today, Douglas also feels extremely grateful for his great health. And as many cancer survivors can relate to, surviving the disease truly gives you a new outlook on life.
"I was just happy to be alive. I was ecstatic," he shared when recalling his battle. "It feels like a rebirth after you go through cancer and you come out of it. You feel like you're a child."
"You see priorities differently," he added. "You have a much deeper appreciation of marriage, of your children—you see everything a little bit clearer, and a little brighter."
