Shania Twain Talks Losing Her Husband to Her Best Friend: "I Don't Invite That Trigger Into My Life"

Singer admits the breakup was extremely difficult on a personal level

Shania Twain may feel like a woman, but she didn't always feel like a strong one.

Fans may recall the country singer's public split from husband Robert "Mutt" Lange back in 2008. The separation led to front-page headlines partly because Lange would ultimately marry Twain's best friend.

While it's been close to seven years since the news broke, Twain can't help but recall how devastating it was at the time.

"When that happened, I thought, ‘Forget it, this is more than I can handle—I'm never going to sing again,'" she told the New York Post. "I had to grieve through it." 

But as many people can relate to, time can heal some wounds. It also didn't hurt that she could open up about the experience in her book From This Moment On released back in 2011.

Fast-forward to today and Twain is more than willing to describe her relationship with Lange as cordial. After all, they share a 13-year-old son together. When it comes to her former friend, however, that's a different story.

"I don't see her, ever," Twain told the publication. "I don't invite that trigger into my life…She's not my future—she's not my past."

Back in March, the "That Don't Impress Me Much" crooner admitted to Andy Cohen that she wishes that "I'd never met" her ex BFF Marie-Anne Thiebaud. In fact, when she ultimately ran into her, the singer was almost at a loss for words.

"I had a total panic attack," she said. "I just told her that she was a bad person—that's all I could get out!"

While the past sometimes finds a way of showing up again, Twain is now focused on her tour that will take her all over the country this summer.

"I'm going to visit the fans, instead of having them visit me," she said after enjoying a residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas back in 2012. "It's going to be completely different from Las Vegas."
