The new Spider-Man has officially been named!

Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures announced earlier this morning that after an exhaustive search, Tom Holland has been named to star as the beloved hero.

Holland's first film as Peter Parker and Spider-Man will land in theaters on July 28, 2017, and will be directed by Jon Watts.

Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Group Chairman, said in a statement released today that "it's a big day here at Sony….I've worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent.  For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom's screen tests were special.   All in all, we are off to a roaring start."

Amy Pascal, who launched the franchise in 1999 with Toby Maguire in the titular role, echoed Rothman's sentiments by stating, "[We] all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world. With Tom, we've found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man's story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Andrew Garfield was the last actor linked to the famous role, and starred as Parker for two films in 2012 and 2014.

After The Amazing Spider-Man 2's inability to live up to the success of its predecessor, Garfield got candid with The Daily Beast about the criticism the film faced.

"I read a lot of the reactions from people and I had to stop because I could feel I was getting away from how I actually felt about it," he shared.

"Constructive criticism is different from people just being dicks, and I love constructive criticism. Hopefully, we can get underneath what the criticism was about, and if we missed anything."

Meanwhile, Sally Field—who played Aunt May alongside Garfield—dished to E! News that she'll miss working with the Brit.

"[He was the] most perfect fellow to work with, so I will miss him, but I'll find him," she gushed before adding that his acting chops were "just perfect."

In addition to getting his Spidey sense perfected, Holland has quite a few major films in the pipeline including In the Heart of the Sea, which stars Chris Hemsworth, and Backcountry with Suicide Squad's Joel Kinnaman.
