From spring break to spring breakdown!

Patrick Schwarzenegger is "totally devastated and heartbroken" over the paparazzi photos that were taken during his spring break trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, last weekend, an insider tells E! News. The University of Southern California junior publicly denied that anything inappropriate happened at an Irish pub and told his Twitter followers that "he Would NEVER do anything" to hurt Miley Cyrus.

Schwarzenegger said the bikini-clad brunette with her arms wrapped around his neck was "one of my best friends girlfriend," but regardless, the 21-year-old Lamda Chi Alpha fraternity member is on thin ice.

Making matters worse: Cyrus has met the girl. "They've known each other for well over a year," a source previously told E! News of Cyrus and the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority sister, whose name is Natalie. "They've definitely hung out before—they're part of the same group of friends. They've hung out a lot."

So, what's a guy like Schwarzenegger to do?

Since returning home from Cabo San Lucas, Schwarzenegger has been laying low in Malibu. "He doesn't even know what to do with himself and just wants to hide from the world. He's had some of his friends around for support, but he's very down and upset. He hasn't cracked a smile or been able to think about anything except Miley," the insider tells E! News. "He's so embarrassed and knows he screwed up."

The fate of his relationship with the 22-year-old pop star remains unclear.

Cyrus has been hanging out with friends, including BFF Cheyne Thomas, "but she isn't seeing Patrick."

In fact, Liam Hemsworth's former fiancée is not even in California right now.

On Thursday, the singer joined Mike WiLL Made-It on stage at SXSW in Austin, Texas. For Cyrus' surprise appearance, she sang "23" and "We Can't Stop," which were produced by her rapper friend. They also teamed up with Future and Rae Sremmurd for "Throw Sum Mo," from the latter's album, SremmLife.

Cyrus posted several pictures of her performance on Instagram, but made no mention of her boyfriend drama. Instead, she danced the night away with Thomas, actress Zoë Kravitz and model Stella Maxwell.
