Ryan Adams performed an emotional, haunting, Grammy-nominated ballad on The Late Late Show on Friday night, in an episode that aired hours after it was revealed he and pop star and actress Mandy Moore have split.

The two wed more than five years ago in Savannah, Georgia. Reps for Adams, 40, and Moore, 30, announced on Friday that the two have "mutually decided to end their marriage," adding that the breakup is "respectful" and "amicable." The pair has no children.

Friday's episode of The Late Late Show was filmed earlier in the day and was guest hosted by Bridesmaids director and standup comic Judd Apatow. Adams' performance marked his first public appearance since news of the split.

Adams sang his 2014 ballad "Gimme Something Good," which is nominated for a 2015 Grammy for Best Rock Song (watch the full episode of The Late Late Show here)

The track contains lyrics such as "I can't talk / My mind is so blank / So I'm going for a walk / I've got nothing left" and "All my life been shaking / Wanting something / Holding everything I have like it was broken / Gimme something good."

"Gimme Something Good" is a track on Adams' self-titled 2014 album, which features backup vocals from Moore and is also nominated for a Grammy at this year's Feb. 8 ceremony (check out a full list of 2015 Grammy Award nominees). Its music video features actress Elvira.

Adams also performed a lighter tune on his acoustic guitar while sitting in the background as Apatow, who began guest hosting the series on Thursday, bid the viewers farewell.

Adams posted a couple of selfies from his The Late Late Show visit.

Moore and Adams were a notoriously private couple and rarely discussed their personal lives. In an interview with the U.K. newspaper The Telegraph, posted in September, Adams talked briefly about their lifestyle, saying they live together in Los Angeles and spent time together in the afternoons due to their different working schedules. He said his wife goes early to bed, while he would go to "the office" every night to work.

Also in September, Adams was asked about Moore in a telephone interview with an Australian radio show. He said, "I just don't share at all about my personal life," and when pressed, hung up the phone.
