Jack Bruce, former bassist and vocalist of the '60s blues and psychedelic rock supergroup Cream, has died at age 71.

The Scottish musician, who was considered one of the most respected bass players in the industry and whose iconic band also included legendary singer and guitarist Eric Clapton, passed away at his home in England on Saturday, surrounded by his family, BBC News quoted his publicist as saying.

He is survived by his wife, Margrit, five children and a granddaughter.

"It is with great sadness that we, Jack's family, announce the passing of our beloved Jack: husband, father, granddad, and all round legend," Bruce's loved ones said in an official statement posted on his Facebook page on Saturday.

"The world of music will be a poorer place without him, but he lives on in his music and forever in our hearts," they added.

The cause of Bruce's death was not revealed. The musician had battled liver cancer more than 10 years ago. He underwent a transplant, which nearly killed him.

Cream is known for songs such as "I Feel Free," "White Room" and "Sunshine Of Your Love." In addition to Bruce and Clapton, who is now 69, the group also included drummer Ginger Baker, who is now 75.

Cream split in 1968. All members pursued solo careers. The band mates reunited in 1993, performing on stage at Cream's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, and in 2005 to for several concerts in London.

Bruce was mourned online by several other iconic musicians, including two musicians from Ozzy Osbourne's metal band, Black Sabbath.

"So sad to hear of Jack Bruce passing," tweeted bassist Geezer Butler. "My biggest influence and favorite bass player. Thank you, Jack. RIP."

"Very sad to hear of the passing of Jack Bruce, a major influence in music and an amazing bass player and singer," said Tony Iommi, the group's guitarist. "He was a hero to so many."
