Guardians of the Galaxy TV Series Coming in 2015

Animated Disney XD series will center on Peter Quill (Star-Lord), Gamora, Rocket, Groot and Drax as they team up to save the universe

Marvel's misfits are heading to the small screen!

Disney XD is set to launch Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy animated series, based on the summer blockbuster, in 2015, the network announced during its New York Comic-Con panel on Friday. The series, which will center on Peter Quill (aka Star-Lord), Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon and Groot, will debut in 2015 and be part of Disney XD's "Marvel Universe" block of programming.

"This is a very exciting time for the Marvel Animation Studio as we get to explore the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe by developing the first-ever Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy animated series," Jeph Loeb, head of Marvel Television, said in a statement. "After starring in the biggest movie of 2014, everyone wants more of Star-Lord and his crew—now they'll get it."

During the panel, Disney XD gave Marvel fans their first look at the animated series via test footage featuring Rocket and Peter.

Marc Buhaj, senior vice president of programming and general manager at Disney XD, said, "The movie and franchise quickly became a worldwide phenomenon. We're looking forward to working with the great team at Marvel Television to deliver an engaging animated series that fans can enjoy each week."

Guardians of the Galaxy, starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Bradley Cooper (as the voice of Rocket), dominated the box office this summer, bringing in a record-breaking $94 million in its opening weekend. A sequel is set to hit theaters in July 2017.
