Nick Jonas is opening up about love—at least he does in "Chains," the first single from his upcoming solo album.

"Gave you my heart, but you took my soul," Jonas sings. "You got me in chains, you got me in chains for your love."

While he doesn't name names, Jonas says he certainly can relate to the song, written by Jason Evigan, Amar Malik and Danny Parker.

"I found my way to connect to the song," Jonas, 21, exclusively tells me. "I found it was really true and real. For me, it embodies that feeling of being trapped in a love that is kind of doomed."

He also sings, "Baby, tell me why you do me wrong?"

Yikes.

But don't feel too bad for Jonas. While he says "it can be" tough to sing about difficult relationships, it actually helps him heal.

"Part of my process of writing and making music is that it helps me not feel that way anymore," Jonas said. "You get it out of your system. Some people write in their journals, some people talk to somebody. For me it's making music. I think it's a helpful way to process things."
