Emma Watson Wears a Rather Somber Black Gown to Noah's NYC Premiere, Russell Crowe Plants a Kiss on Jennifer Connelly

It's Oscar de la Renta but it's a little boring for the usually very fashion-forward 23-year-old

Emma Watson was going for the grown-up look tonight.

As in, way grown up.

The 23-year-old trendsetter, usually known for her cutting-edge fashion choices (a dress over pants at the Golden Globes, anyone?), wore a rather conservative black gown to the New York premiere of Noah Wednesday at the Ziegfeld Theatre.

What is that, crêpe de Chine? (No, it's actually duchess satin from Oscar de la Renta's Fall 2014 collection, but that's a dress for a far older woman. A rich, classy, elegant older woman, but still an older woman.)

Watson herself looked lovely, but after the fabulous navy and black chiffon number with the open back that she wore to Noah's Berlin premiere, and the funky hair clips she sported at the film's Madrid opening...

We expected something a little more exciting, especially for the Big Apple.

But all, including Watson, seemed to be having a good time on the red carpet. Russell Crowe, who plays the titular ark builder, planted a kiss on the cheek of his onscreen wife, Jennifer Connelly. Watson plays their daughter-in-law in Darren Aronofsky's big-budget biblical epic.

Connelly, for instance, mixed it up in a form-fitting varnished-leather top, a brightly colored brocade skirt and red patent-leather ankle boots, all by Nicolas Ghesquière for Louis Vuitton. (The combination of which, on her, may not be the greatest, but she's the first star to hit the red carpet in custom LV since Ghesquière's arrival.)

But maybe Watson was just tired of all the excitement. She's been all over the world promoting this film, and she's had to field all sorts of questions.

Such as, "who sexes the animals?" which is what David Letterman asked, referring to who figured out which animals scored passage on the ark, during her appearance on the Late Show last night.

"Um, I don't quite understand what you're saying," a smiling yet bewildered-looking Watson replied.

"My son is very fond of turtles," Letterman explained. "And he will come to me with a turtle and ask me, ‘Dad, is this a boy or a girl?' And I know how to sex a turtle."
