"We have to go back!"
It was Lost's best-known catchphrase (said by a desperate, bearded Matthew Fox), but could the iconic ABC series ever actually come back in some way? Via network TV, Netflix, a movie, a one-man play? (OK, maybe not that last one.)
Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof tells E! News he believes Lost will live on in some way in the future—but there's a catch.
"I think there will be more Lost," Lindelof tells me. "But I don't think it's gonna come from us. My guess is that some other creative team will come in and take their creative spin on this content, which is really exciting."
For his part, Lindelof says he's done with the entire Lost universe—something co-creator JJ Abrams also has said. "I think we told our story, you know," Lindelof explains. "We put so much energy into ending it, that to put energy into kickstarting it again, you know...The show, I felt like it had a very successful life. Maybe it lived a little too long, but I never felt like it didn't live long enough. So I feel like there will be more, but it won't be made by us."
ABC, and by extension its parent company, Disney, own the rights to Lost. Which means the studio/network could decide to reinvent Lost again in some rebooted format in the future, without any involvement from the show's original creative team.
Lost's series finale, which aired in May 2010, lives on as perhaps the most controversial of all time (rivaling The Sopranos' cut-to-black ending). Some of us loved it (and will fight you to the death over it in a dark alley somewhere in the Flash Sideways world!), but others felt jilted by the string of unanswered questions—questions that Lindelof still hears from fans to this day.
"The [questions] that were alive during the show are still the biggest ones post-show," Lindelof tells me. "What was up with the polar bears? Are they all dead? Were they dead the whole time? Different expressions of that… Who was on the other outrigger? Why Nicki and Paolo? The show lived with questions, it died with questions, and I'm happy to have questions be the legacy."
Lindelof—who is currently producing HBO's The Leftovers, premiering this summer—and Carlton Cuse talked about their intentions behind the finale for the first time at Sunday night's Paleyfest event, and also answered definitively whether the characters were dead the whole time. ("No, no, no.")
But something you "Jate" or "Skate" love triangle fans may find most intritriguing? I asked Lindelof whether he ever considered ending the series with Kate and Sawyer together and his answer was pretty amusing!
