"Twilight, I'm sorry, is about a very unhealthy, toxic relationship," the Divergent star tells Teen Vogue. "She falls in love with this guy and the second he leaves her, her life is over and she's going to kill herself! What message are we sending to young people? That is not going to help this world evolve."
Even Robert Pattinson—who played the brooding Edward Cullen in all five films—wasn't entirely sold on author Stephenie Meyer's vampire love story. In the April 2011 issue of Vanity Fair, for example, he admitted that it was "weird" to be "kind of representing something you don't particularly like."
Seven months later, Moviefone asked the leading man if he would be a Twilight fan if he didn't star in the movies. "I would just mindlessly hate it," the British actor replied with a laugh.
Pattinson was equally as critical of Meyer's books—particularly because they were inspired by a sexy dream she had. "I was convinced that Stephenie was convinced that she was Bella," the actor told E! News in 2008. "I was just convinced that this woman is mad, she's completely mad, and she's in love with her own fictional creation."
When James Franco reviewed both Breaking Dawn movies, he couldn't believe what he saw. "The protagonists finally marry, having waited until the wise old age of 18, and since the book and the film dutifully show them being wed, they are then allowed to f--k each others' brains out," he wrote.
"For a film that claims to be sexually responsible," the 127 Hours star continued, "the Twilight movies are awfully dependent on teenage sex to attract viewers. The actors prance about like pieces of meat, their disturbingly developed bodies on full display; Taylor Lautner's rippling teenage chest is just a little better than the child beauty-pageant stars at the end of Little Miss Sunshine."
Miley Cyrus first dissed Twilight in 2009, telling Cleveland's Q92 radio station, "I've never seen it, nor will I. I don't believe in it. I don't like vampires, I don't like the wolf that pops out of the screen when I'm watching TV at night, I don't want anything to do with it. I don't like the shirts, I don't like any of it."
Later that year, Cyrus complained about the "cult" aspect of Twilight. "People get too into it," she said during an interview with Sirius XM's Morning Mash Up. "I think it's like when guys look at supermodels and they're like, 'That's the perfect girl.' That's what those kind of movies do to us. They're, like, thinking that's what girls should be like and not everyone is going to be Edward, hate to say it."
Fashion designer Whitney Port wasn't impressed with the film adaptation, either—even though she never read the books. "I thought the movie was really bad," she told MTV News in 2009. "I love whatever his name is—Robert? I think he's so good-looking and handsome. I haven't met him."
Authors Anne Rice and Stephen King have also dissed Meyer. "My vampires possess gravitas," Queen of the Damned scribe Rice seethed on Facebook in October 2011. They can afford to be merciful." In February 2009, King told USA Weekend that Meyer "can't write worth a darn. She's not very good."
Of course, not everyone is anti-Twilight. President Barack Obama once admitted that he enjoyed reading and discussing the series with his oldest daughter, Malia Obama. Other famous fans include 50 Cent, Rosario Dawson, Hilary Duff, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Emma Watson and Rachel Zoe.
