Fans of the Bridget Jones franchise, if you want to avoid knowing a major plot point for Helen Fielding's upcoming third book, Mad About the Boy, we'd suggest you stop reading any further.

That's because an extract from the tome published in the U.K.'s Sunday Times reveals that everyone's frustrated, weight-obsessed single gal becomes—gasp!—a widow.
That's right. Bridget's true love, Mark Darcy, played by Colin Firth in the first two movies, Bridget Jones's Diary and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, gets killed off, though how remains an open question until Mad About the Boy hits stores Oct.10 when it will be revealed via flashback deep into the novel.
As for Jones, portrayed to perfection by Renée Zellweger, the story picks up with her character now a 51-year-old cougar and mother of two who, when she's not obsessed with wrinkles, ends up dating a 30-year-old boy toy named Roxter after the two meet on Twitter five years after Darcy's death.
The tragic news about the latter's demise caused quite a stir on Twitter as grief-stricken fans including Today show contributor Jenna Bush Hager mourned the loss of the handsome fictional human rights lawyer.
No word whether Firth will reprise his role for any flashback sequences when filming on the big-screen version of Mad About the Boy presumably gets underway in the next year or so. Both he and Zellweger have expressed interest in starring in another installment, pending the right script.
Perhaps we might see Hugh Grant's Daniel Cleaver re-enter the picture?
Meanwhile, a Bridget Jones stage musical is also in the works from director Stephen Daldry that features music by British songbird Lily Allen.
