No reprieve is coming for Cameron Douglas.
The 34-year-old son of Michael Douglas remains stuck with a nearly 10-year prison sentence after a federal appellate court today upheld a New York judge's decision to tack another four and a half years onto Douglas' original punishment for heroin possession and conspiracy to distribute narcotics.
Douglas, who originally was sentenced in April 2010 to a lenient five years behind bars because he cooperated with authorities, is due to be released in early 2018.
His sentence was almost doubled in 2011 after he was caught with drugs in prison and then lied about how he ended up in possession of the contraband.
In appealing the judgment in December, Douglas' attorney, Paul Shechtman, called his client's new sentence "shockingly long" and "maybe the harshest sentence ever imposed on a federal prisoner for a drug possession offense."
A three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Court of Appeals determined that the sentence was reasonable, with Judge Gerald Lynch writing that this is an example of a defendant who "has shown himself to be a poor candidate for treatment or leniency."
