Jon Voight, is speaking out in support of future son-in-law Brad Pitt's mother, Jane Pitt, after the latter sparked a controversy last week when she sent a gay marriage-opposing missive to a Missouri newspaper.
"Good for her," Angelina Jolie's Oscar-winning father told Fox News, sticking up for Pitt's right to speak her mind and noting that he agreed with her.
The brouhaha erupted after Jane Pitt sent a letter to the editor of her local Springfield News-Leader newspaper in which she dissed President Obama and praised Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, particularly his "Christian conviction concerning homosexuality."
"Any Christian who does not vote or writes in a name is casting a vote for Romney's opponent, Barack Hussein Obama—a man who sat in Jeremiah Wright's church for years, did not hold a public ceremony to mark the National Day of Prayer, and is a liberal who supports the killing of unborn babies and same-sex marriage," she wrote.
Voight, a staunch conservative, felt compelled to weigh in after right-leaning website WorldNetDaily reported that Pitt has since been the target of hate-filled tweets claiming she's homophobic and even purportedly received death threats for her views.
The 73-year-old National Treasure star isn't the only one defending her. Brad's younger brother, Doug Pitt, talked about the drama on the Today show, telling Matt Lauer, "I think moms and dads and kids agree to disagree all over the world."
"There can be a healthy discussion when people disagree with you, and I think there should be," Doug noted, adding that his family doesn't let differing views sour their relationships. "It's open discussion; we can learn from each other, and if anything, it solidifies your point. Or maybe you learn something."
His megastar sibling has remained mum on the matter, and a rep declined to comment. Jane Pitt was also unavailable for comment.
